What AI Can't Do (and Why That Matters)

AI tools have real and important limitations. They don't have access to live information unless specifically connected to the internet, so their knowledge has a cut-off date. They can produce plausible-sounding but factually wrong content — a phenomenon known as "hallucination." They may reflect biases present in their training data. And they have no understanding of your organisation's specific context, culture, or legal obligations unless you explicitly provide that information.

This matters enormously in professional settings. An AI tool that confidently produces an incorrect legal reference, a fabricated statistic, or an inappropriate response to a sensitive query can cause real harm if its output isn't checked. In regulated sectors — healthcare, finance, legal services, education — this risk is amplified.

The practical takeaway is simple: treat AI output as a starting point, not a finished product. Review everything before it leaves your desk, especially when it involves facts, figures, legal references, or anything affecting a real person.

How to Get Started Safely

If you're new to workplace AI, the best approach is to start small and stay curious. Pick one low-stakes task — summarising an internal document, drafting a first version of a routine email, or generating a list of questions for a meeting — and experiment. Notice where the AI is helpful and where it falls short.

Check whether your organisation has a policy on AI use. Many employers are now issuing guidance on which tools are approved, what kinds of data can be entered into AI systems, and how outputs should be reviewed.
